Before Commencing Your Application

Application Details

The Research Stipend Scholarship Round for enrolled doctoral students is an opportunity for eligible, high-quality candidates to apply for a research stipend scholarship.

A stipend scholarship provides financial assistance during your study. The 2026 Stipend Scholarship value was $35,707 per annum.  

The duration of enrolment already consumed will be deducted from the stipend duration.  Stipends are paid up to a consumed load of 3.5 years.

Please ensure you discuss your application with your supervisor. 

Supervisors will be contacted by the Research Scholarship Team to complete support documentation.

Applications close on Sunday 20 September 2026 (11:59pm AEST).

Late applications will not be accepted.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome by 1 December 2026. 

Eligibility

Eligible to apply

You must: 

  • be enrolled as a Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated) candidate
  • at the time of application, have had Confirmation of Candidature:
    • approved by your Institute (Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated))
    • planned and scheduled for prior to 6 November 2026 (Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated))
  • have achieved an average score of 80% in the
    • Year 1 Coursework (Doctor of Philosophy)
    • Year 1 Coursework and Year 1 Thesis (Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated))
  • have a consumed load less than or equal to 2.0 as at 1 January 2027 
  • enrol as a full-time candidate (on acceptance of offer)

Ineligible to apply

  • PhD (Integrated) in coursework phase; OR
  • Currently a sponsored candidate; OR
  • Applicants who have a degree at the same level of applied degree

Word Limits

Note that a number of questions have word limits which SmartyGrants will not let you exceed.

Word limits are a maximum only. Applications are welcomed which use less words while addressing the question appropriately.

Required Documentation

It is IMPORTANT to prepare all the required documents early, in order to complete your application in time.

Only complete applications will be considered. Complete applications require:

  • up-to-date CV including bibliographic reference of your top five publications and ORCID ID
  • supporting evidence for your top five publications*
  • supporting documentation for your Work, Leadership & Community experience
  • 200 word statement on your achievement Relative to Opportunity (if applicable)

*If you do not provide documentation to support your publications, they will not be considered. 

Your application cannot be properly assessed if you do not submit the required documentation.
