What this application covers

This application is for Domestic and International students wanting to apply for a scholarship to study a graduate research degree (PhD, Research Masters) at Victoria University as part of the following scholarship programs:

  • Research Training Program Stipend Scholarshps - Domestic and International (RTPSS - Domestic, RTPSS - International)
  • Victoria University (International) Postgraduate Research Scholarship (VUPRS and VUIPRS)
  • VU Diversity Research Scholarship
  • Project-Based Scholarships
  • Industry Supported Scholarships

RTPSS - Domestic and International, VUPRS and VUIPRS scholarships allow you to propose a topic and supervisor. Applicants require an H1 average (at least 80% VU standard) in the final year of their Bachelor Degree or Honours Year, as well as the other eligibility criteria for the course into which they seek admission.

Industry Supported Scholarships and Project-Based Scholarships relate to grant or industry funded research programs with existing topics needing to be addressed. Applicants require an Credit/Distinction average (at least 70% VU standard) in the final year of their Bachelor Degree or Honours Year, along with other eligibility criteria for the course into which they seek admission.

International students who completed a course at Victoria University in 2017 or afterwards and all Domestic applicants are eligible to apply for scholarships in all these programs.

International students who have not completed a course at Victoria University in 2017 or later can only apply for Industry Supported Scholarships and Project-Based scholarships. 

Applicants should read the application guides for for all these programs before submitting their application, in order to make sure they understand eligibility requirements, selection criteria and the conditions of award.

 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Applicants can apply for any scheme available to domestic students. Note that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Scholarships (including the Foley Collection Research Scholarship) are administered separately by VU Research. Use the Moondani Balluk Research Scholarships form at the VU smartygrants homepage.

Word limits

Note that a number of questions have word limits, which Smartygrants will not let you exceed.

Word limits are a maximum only. Applications are welcomed which use less words while addressing the question appropriately.

Required documentation

It is IMPORTANT to prepare all the required documents early, in order to complete your application in time.

Only complete applications will be considered. Complete applications require:

  • Proof of citizenship
  • English language proficiency evidence (as appropriate)
  • Academic transcripts & degree qualification certificates
  • Current CV

We urge you to contact your referees early in the process in order to have your referees prepare and submit referee reports directly to us before the closing date. You will need to provide them with your application ID.

You should also identify your preferred supervisor and confirm their availability and discuss your topic with them.
